The drive from Melbourne to Adelaide

Spent 3 weeks in Australia this spring (our spring) and had a fantastic time. I had never experienced the drive from Melbourne, past the 12 Apostles, the Limestone Coast, the small towns, the Murray River, to Adelaide. Along the way I experienced many "firsts" that I would like to share.

Although I had visited the 12 Apostles and the Shipwreck Coast before, this time the experience was highlighted by a guide (thanks, Ruben) who provided a lot of history about the area. Did you know that the original name of the rock formations was the Sow and Piglets. I can understand the name change....After all, who would want to visit the Sow and Piglets when the 12 Apostles sounds so much more attractive.

The Limestone Coast is certainly a fantastic touring route from Melbourne to Adelaide. The Blue Lake, Mount Gambier, was not up to it's normal coloration, but we were still able to see some of the blue that provides the lake with its' name.

The coastal fishing villages, Robe, Kingston and Port MacDonnell were quaint and inviting. From upmarket dining to take-away local fish and chips, the Limestone Coast caters to every budget. There's no reason to miss a meal when exploring the region.

The Murray River cruise on the Captain Cook PS Murray Princess provided us with some downtime where we were able to enjoy a good meal, good wine and an opportunity to show off our dance steps. The cruise, for us, ended too soon!

Off early in the morning to continue our drive to Adelaide and on to the South Australia Museum where our Aboriginal guide educated us about the many historical art pieces donated to the museum by the Aboriginal people. It was a short but very interesting learning experience.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!
